Systematic Catalog of Culicidae
Fossil Species
The purpose of this catalog is to provide a guide to the literature dealing
with the living species of mosquitoes only, so we do no more here than
offer an annotated list of the fossil species that were either included
in recent genera, or that are obviously Culicidae as restricted here. For
this reason we do not include the new genera and species that Bode (1953)
described from immature forms as possibly belonging to the Culicidae. Possibly
several of these are Chaoboridae. None seem to be Culicidae and some are
probably not Diptera. Those interested in the phylogeny and palaeontology
of mosquitoes should consult Edwards (1923c), Christophers (1933:57-59),
and Statz (1944), Wood and Borkent (1989), Harbach and Kitching (1998),
and Poinar et al. (2000: review).
